From a community initiative to a government-aided secondary school, our story is one of cooperation, perseverance and belief in education.
A school shaped by its community
Kyangwali Secondary School is situated in Kyebitaka Village, Kasonga Parish, within Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in Kikuube District.
The school began in 1997 as a community initiative supported by refugee and Ugandan residents. The Office of the Prime Minister allocated land and buildings, while AVSI—then a UNHCR implementing agency—provided early financial assistance.
Today, Kyangwali is a government-aided secondary school that continues to serve a diverse community through effective teaching, learner support and education for self-reliance.

Community beginnings
Refugee and Ugandan residents established the school as a shared community initiative.
Registration & UNEB centre
The school received its operating licence and registration, and acquired UNEB Centre Number U2007.
Community stewardship
After external financial support ended, the community sustained and managed the school.
Government-aided school
The Government of Uganda took over the school, strengthening its role in public education.
